In 2010, Kim Vernick, a vibrant 52-year-old, faced an unexpected diagnosis that would change her life forever. To tackle her diagnosis, Kim turned to the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn, enrolling in a clinical trial that combined chemotherapy and radiation. The treatment regimen consisted of powerful drugs like oxaliplatin, Avastin, and gemcitabine, administered over a two-week cycle, followed by an intensive eight-week course of radiation therapy. This included a second round of chemotherapy alongside a pioneering proton radiation therapy, which had recently become available for pancreatic cancer patients.
