A Brave Journey Through Pancreatic Cancer: Judith Zitiello’s Story

In a compelling narrative of resilience, Judith Zitiello’s fight against pancreatic cancer began on April 29, 2014. A sudden drop in weight, severe fatigue, and unusual symptoms including amber-colored urine prompted her to seek medical attention. After a sonogram, Judith learned that her health issues stemmed from a blocked bile duct, caused by a significant mass in the head of her pancreas.

Facing a Tough Choice: Surgery or Chemotherapy?

Judith consulted with renowned specialists, including Dr. Horacio Asbun, a leading surgeon at Baptist Health South Florida, and Dr. Raimando Mossimo, a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. With Dr. Asbun known for his expertise in pancreatic cancer surgeries, Judith found herself weighing her options carefully.

Initially, the tumor’s position gave hope for a laparoscopic Whipple procedure, a complex surgery to remove the tumor. However, an MRI revealed that the tumor had entwined around the hepatic artery, complicating her situation. She faced two choices:

  • Option 1: Undergo chemotherapy to shrink the tumor and potentially avoid a dangerous surgery.
  • Option 2: Proceed with the surgery, risking significant complications.

After thoughtful deliberation, Judith opted to move forward with the surgery, which was scheduled for the following Monday.

Surgical Success and Post-Operative Challenges

The surgery was challenging, but after several hours, Dr. Asbun reported success. Judith had a 3.5 cm adenocarcinoma removed along with 30 lymph nodes, five of which tested positive for cancer, classifying her condition as Stage IIb.

However, Judith faced a setback due to a severe post-surgical infection, which delayed her recovery. Once she regained strength, she commenced her treatment regimen, starting with gemcitabine administered through a Power Port. Following this, she underwent radiation therapy combined with a 5-FU chemo pump for a month, before returning to gemcitabine treatment.

The culmination of her therapy came on December 24, 2014, when a CT scan confirmed she was cancer-free.

Celebrating Recovery and Advocacy

Judith’s journey didn’t end there. By the time she reached her fifth quarterly CT scan, both her oncologist, Dr. Stephen Ko, and her medical team celebrated her victory over cancer. Judith’s spirit and determination inspired many as she actively engaged in efforts to support pancreatic cancer research and assist families facing similar challenges.

Sadly, Judith passed away after a decade-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Her legacy includes guiding other families through their journeys and advocating for those with spinal cord injuries.
