A Journey of Resilience: Laurie MacCaskill’s Triumph Over Pancreatic Cancer
In 2006, Laurie MacCaskill, a health-conscious individual, faced the shocking reality of a pancreatic cancer diagnosis at just 55 years old. Despite her dedication to fitness and a healthy lifestyle, Laurie experienced a sudden and severe pain that led her on a relentless quest for answers. Her determination to understand her body and advocate for herself ultimately uncovered a life-threatening condition that many fear.
The Path to Diagnosis: A Fight for Answers
Laurie’s health journey began with confusion and frustration. Initially, she sought help from multiple doctors, only to be told her symptoms were due to minor issues like gas or muscle strain. However, the persistent pain and subsequent weight loss were undeniable signals that something was wrong.
- Symptoms Encountered:
- Intense, electric pain throughout her body
- Persistent pain in the lower right side of her back
- Loss of appetite and fatigue
After persistent requests for further testing, Laurie underwent a colonoscopy and advanced endoscopy, resulting in the devastating revelation: “I’m sorry, Laurie, you have pancreatic cancer.” This diagnosis felt like a death sentence, but Laurie’s resolve only grew stronger.
Initiating Treatment: A Battle Begins
Laurie’s cancer was classified as stage III, having spread to her duodenum and lymph nodes. The treatment plan included a Whipple procedure performed by renowned surgeon Dr. Howard Reber at UCLA Health. Following her surgery, oncologist Dr. William Isacoff prescribed a rigorous chemotherapy regimen featuring a multitude of drugs, including Gemzar and FOLFIRINOX.
Despite the harsh side effects, including hair loss and debilitating fatigue, Laurie remained committed to maintaining a positive outlook.
- Coping Strategies:
- Engaging in light workouts and outdoor activities
- Allowing moments of vulnerability while focusing on positive thoughts
- Seeking guidance and wisdom throughout her journey
Laurie’s proactive attitude resonated with her medical team, reinforcing the importance of an active approach to fighting cancer.
A Turning Point: Discovering Hope
Three and a half years into treatment, Laurie faced a daunting prognosis: she had only three to six months to live. A pivotal recommendation to consult Dr. Daniel Von Hoff in Arizona brought new hope. Dr. Von Hoff identified an underlying infection and initiated treatment with Rocephin, which Laurie learned to administer at home.
Miraculously, this treatment worked, and Laurie has been cancer-free ever since, marking a significant milestone in her ongoing battle.
Embracing Life Again: Advocacy and Motivation
With the unwavering support of her husband, friends, and a compassionate healthcare team, Laurie reclaimed her active lifestyle, participating in biking, hiking, and running. For the past decade, she has passionately advocated for increased research funding for pancreatic cancer, serving as the Chair of the National Board of Directors for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network from 2013 to 2016.
