Thriving Beyond Diagnosis: A Long-Term Survivor’s Journey with Pancreatic Cancer

Inspiring Journey of a Pancreatic Cancer Survivor
Meet Roberta Luna, a resilient woman whose battle with pancreatic cancer spans over 15 years. Her story is not just about survival; it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and advocacy. With a family history deeply intertwined with this relentless disease, Roberta’s experiences shed light on the importance of awareness, early detection, and support in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
A Family Legacy of Struggle
Roberta’s journey with pancreatic cancer began in 1998, when her father was diagnosed. Tragically, he passed away just two months later, forcing Roberta to confront the harsh reality of this disease. She later discovered that pancreatic cancer had also claimed her grandmother and uncle. The weight of this family history became even more profound when, on April 1, 2002, Roberta herself received the diagnosis.
Despite experiencing symptoms like nausea and diarrhea, her age—mid-40s—led doctors to dismiss the possibility of pancreatic cancer. However, Roberta was determined to pursue testing due to her family’s history, ultimately leading to the discovery of an inoperable tumor.
Navigating Treatment Challenges
Upon her diagnosis, Roberta’s medical history became crucial. Having undergone kidney surgery at the age of three, she faced additional challenges. Chemotherapy drugs commonly used for pancreatic cancer posed potential risks to her kidney health, necessitating a careful approach. She worked closely with a nephrologist, guided by an oncologist specializing in pancreatic cancer.
Roberta’s treatment journey began with a clinical trial involving 5-FU and gemcitabine, followed by radiation therapy. Unfortunately, the radiation compromised her kidney function, forcing her to pause treatment. During this recovery phase, she explored holistic medicine, adjusting her diet and incorporating supplements before resuming standard medical care.
Over the years, Roberta has been treated with various medications, including FOLFIRINOX, Abraxane, and Tarceva. Despite not participating in additional clinical trials, she has engaged in several case studies that contribute to ongoing research in pancreatic cancer treatment.
Living with Pancreatic Cancer
Roberta’s journey is not just about surviving; it’s also about continuous monitoring and adaptation. Although tumor profiling was not an option at her diagnosis, advancements in genetic testing have prompted her to consider re-evaluation. Regular check-ups include blood tests, urine tests, and imaging scans to track her tumor’s status. Currently, she continues her treatment with Tarceva and has recently completed a regimen of gemcitabine and Abraxane.
Advocacy and Community Engagement
Motivated by her experiences, Roberta actively participates in advocacy efforts through the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN). As the Mission Chair for the Orange County Affiliate, she dedicates her time to educating both the public and healthcare professionals about pancreatic cancer. Her involvement doesn’t stop there; she is also part of the Survivor Council, amplifying the voices of survivors within PanCAN’s initiatives.
Roberta leads the PurpleStride Orange County event with her husband, Vic. This annual 5K walk raises funds and awareness for pancreatic cancer research. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the event attracted around 2,000 participants, including 50 survivors, raising an impressive $240,000 for the cause.
A Continuing Fight
Roberta’s unwavering spirit and dedication to fighting pancreatic cancer serve as an inspiration to many. While she remains vigilant in her health journey, she continues to advocate for awareness and support for those affected by this challenging disease.
