Reesa Levy’s experience with pancreatic cancer is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of seeking expert care. After a seemingly ordinary summer, a sudden and severe pain led her to an unexpected diagnosis that would change her life forever. This narrative highlights her journey from initial symptoms to treatment, underscoring critical moments and decisions that shaped her path.
The Beginning of a Life-Altering Diagnosis
It all started after a delightful summer in Connecticut. While sitting in her car, Reesa felt an alarming pain near her appendix. Initially attributing it to gas, she quickly found herself in a doctor’s office the following day, leading to a CT scan. The results were alarming: acute appendicitis. However, treatment took an unexpected turn when the surgeon opted for medication instead of immediate surgery. Unfortunately, Reesa’s condition worsened, prompting her internist to recommend another scan. This second scan revealed a concerning shadow on her pancreas.
In October 2017, Reesa underwent an appendectomy. Following a six-week wait for an MRI due to surgical staples, the imaging confirmed the presence of a suspicious shadow on her pancreas. A biopsy at Boca Raton Hospital on January 2, 2018, confirmed the presence of cancer cells in the tail of her pancreas.
Navigating Treatment Options: A New Hope
Shortly after her diagnosis, Reesa’s daughter flew in to support her. Together, they traveled to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where they met the esteemed Dr. William Hawkins, a highly regarded pancreatic surgeon. Reesa’s journey took another turn when a routine exam uncovered two blood clots, one in her leg and another in her lung.
Her diagnosis was confirmed as stage IIa adenocarcinoma, and she was scheduled for a distal pancreatectomy. Dr. Hawkins presented her with an opportunity to join a groundbreaking clinical trial. Inspired by her goddaughter, who is a physician, Reesa eagerly accepted, understanding the potential benefits of additional tests and monitoring. The operation was successfully completed on January 17, 2018, and she was discharged shortly after.
Chemotherapy and Clinical Trials: Facing Challenges Head-On
Post-surgery, Reesa embarked on a challenging six-month chemotherapy regimen. She took three capecitabine tablets daily and underwent weekly gemcitabine infusions. Unfortunately, the infusion process was tough; she required a port for the gemcitabine, which caused side effects like neuropathy and extreme fatigue. Despite hair thinning that led her to wear a wig, she emerged from treatment with renewed vigor.
After a brief recovery period, Reesa participated in a NIH-funded clinical trial. This involved monthly vaccine administrations using an electroporation device—a painful procedure but crucial for her treatment. Thankfully, her hospital and insurance covered the essential blood tests and scans throughout this process.
A Bright Future: Living Cancer-Free
Today, Reesa celebrates a cancer-free life, enjoying every moment. She continues her follow-up care with Dr. Abraham Schwarzberg at the Florida Cancer Center, where she reflects on her journey with gratitude.
