Finding Laughter Amidst Cancer Treatment: How Humor Can Heal

A Life-Altering Diagnosis: My Journey with Pancreatic Cancer
In April 2021, at the age of 53, my life took an unexpected turn that would change everything. I noticed my urine had become unusually dark, prompting me to seek medical attention. A visit to urgent care revealed jaundiced eyes, leading to a swift referral to the emergency room. After a series of scans, the shocking news arrived: I had a mass in my bile duct, indicating potential cancer.
From Diagnosis to Treatment
Following my initial diagnosis, I underwent an endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), which confirmed I was dealing with stage II pancreatic cancer. Thankfully, the cancer was localized to my pancreas, making surgical intervention possible. I sought treatment at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where I found Dr. Matthew Weiss, a surgeon whose expertise would prove invaluable.
After facing multiple complications, including bouts of sepsis, Dr. Weiss performed a Whipple procedure to remove parts of my pancreas, small intestine, gallbladder, and bile duct. Post-surgery, I engaged in six months of chemotherapy at the nearby R. J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center, guided by my compassionate oncologist, Dr. Anna Levy. By February 2022, I completed chemotherapy, and my scans have shown no signs of cancer since!
Finding Humor in Adversity
While navigating my cancer journey, I turned to my passion for comedy. I began writing a special that chronicled my experiences, even from the confines of my hospital bed. A few months after finishing treatment, I recorded my special titled "Getting My Affairs In Order," which you can watch online for free. It’s incredible how humor can be found even in the most challenging situations, from medical procedures to unexpected diagnoses.
Sharing My Story and Celebrating Life
In June 2023, I had the honor of being the keynote speaker at Northwell Health’s Cancer Survivor’s Day, sharing my story with over 1,200 fellow survivors. It was a heartwarming experience to connect with others who have faced similar battles. As I prepare to marry my fiancée, Dawn, this September, I feel immense gratitude for my health, my medical team, and the support of my loved ones.
I often reflect on how cancer has shaped my life. It was undoubtedly the worst experience I’ve faced, yet it has also been rewarding in many ways. A dear friend once shared, “You give your time, talent, or treasure.” While I may not have much treasure to offer, I’m committed to giving my time and talent to help others in similar situations.
