Roberta Luna Opens Up: A Candid Journey Through Pancreatic Cancer

Roberta Luna: A Beacon of Hope in the Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer
Roberta Luna is on a mission to shed light on one of the most deadly forms of cancer—pancreatic cancer. Having faced the heart-wrenching impact of this disease through the loss of her loved ones, Roberta’s personal journey took a pivotal turn when she was diagnosed herself in 2002. With her father, grandmother, and uncle all succumbing to the illness, Roberta’s story embodies resilience and hope, particularly after her tumor unexpectedly went dormant in December 2018.
A Journey of Survival and Advocacy
Roberta’s experience with pancreatic cancer has fueled her desire to empower others through advocacy. As a committed volunteer with the Orange County Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), she has taken on several roles, including Mission Chair and member of the Survivor Council. Alongside her husband, Vic, she has co-chaired the PurpleStride Orange County 5K, raising substantial funds for crucial research and support initiatives.
Now, Roberta is channeling her passion into a new medium: podcasting. She is the voice behind “Living Hope: Your Journey with Pancreatic Cancer,” a weekly podcast airing on OC Talk Radio, where she shares heartfelt stories and insights from those battling this formidable disease.
Launching the Podcast: A New Chapter
Roberta’s foray into podcasting began unexpectedly. Initially unfamiliar with the format, she found herself on air in 2009 during an interview on a student-run radio station. The positive response encouraged her to continue sharing her journey and insights. After moving to OC Talk Radio in 2021, the idea of a dedicated podcast emerged, allowing her to reach a broader audience and foster community connections.
With Vic’s support, they self-funded the venture. The first episode was a revelation for Roberta, who discovered her enthusiasm for connecting with listeners and advocating for pancreatic cancer awareness.
Authenticity and Humor: The Heart of Living Hope
In each episode, Roberta emphasizes authenticity and honesty, aiming to build trust with her audience. She believes that humor can serve as a powerful coping mechanism amidst the weighty topics discussed.
“Laughter can facilitate healing and connection,” Roberta explains. “I strive to create a space where listeners feel acknowledged and uplifted, even as we tackle tough subjects.”
The podcast initially focused on personal narratives but has expanded to include expert interviews, recent research, and practical guidance for navigating the complexities of life with pancreatic cancer.
Engagement with the Community
Roberta remains deeply engaged with the pancreatic cancer community, ensuring the podcast reflects a diverse range of perspectives. She collaborates with various organizations, featuring insights from the Hirshberg Foundation, PanCAN, and the Purple Iris Foundation. Since September 2023, the partnership with Let’s Win has further enriched the podcast’s offerings, bringing new information and resources to its audience.
As research and treatment options evolve, Roberta’s podcast is a vital resource for those impacted by pancreatic cancer. She aims to address both the medical and emotional aspects of the disease, sharing stories of resilience and hope that resonate with listeners.
Memorable Moments and Impactful Stories
Among the many poignant stories shared on “Living Hope,” Roberta recalls the tale of a young man named Trent, whose father passed away from pancreatic cancer shortly after his birth. Trent has since become an advocate, traveling to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness and funding for pancreatic cancer research.
Another touching story features a couple, Lee and Dwaine, who discovered their shared loss of spouses to pancreatic cancer on their first date. Each narrative serves to underscore the profound impact of the disease and the importance of community in the fight against it.
Balancing Life and Advocacy
Roberta initially underestimated the commitment required to produce and host the podcast. Beyond her advocacy, she values time spent with her husband Vic and their family, enjoying simple pleasures and engaging in unique adventures like skydiving together every April.
With Vic’s recent retirement, they anticipate embarking on new travels while continuing their dedicated work in the pancreatic cancer community.
Finding Purpose Through Advocacy
Roberta often reflects on a quote that resonates with her journey: “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” Her dedication to supporting the pancreatic cancer community has become her “why.” Through her podcast, she not only shares her story but also amplifies the voices of others who have been affected by this disease.
Roberta’s commitment to raising awareness, offering support, and sharing vital information showcases her belief in the power of storytelling. Through “Living Hope,” she aims to foster a deeper understanding of pancreatic cancer, advocate for better treatments, and ultimately contribute to a world where this disease is no longer a formidable foe.
