A Personal Journey Through Pancreatic Cancer Treatment
In 2021, Ann Jaffe faced a life-altering diagnosis after experiencing troubling symptoms like heartburn, bloating, and unintentional weight loss. A visit to her gastroenterologist led to a CT scan, uncovering stage IV pancreatic adenocarcinoma. On that fateful day, she was immediately referred to Dr. Craig Devoe at the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center, part of Northwell Health in Lake Success, New York.
Despite considering additional opinions from other specialists in New York City, Ann felt confident in the care she was receiving at Northwell. As a retired registered nurse with 25 years of service at the institution, she understood the advantages of staying within her familiar healthcare system. The convenience, comfort, and efficiency of Northwell made her decision easier.
Rapid Onset of Treatment
Once diagnosed, Ann’s treatment plan was set into motion without delay. She underwent a port insertion, biopsy, and signed up for a clinical trial. Dr. Devoe prescribed the chemotherapy regimen FOLFIRINOX. Fortunately, Ann managed the side effects well, recalling her past experiences as an oncology nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital. This background made her eager to participate in the PASS-01 clinical trial, driven by a desire to contribute to cancer research.
Biomarker testing revealed a somatic BRCA mutation, which allowed her to qualify for maintenance therapy with olaparib. This treatment has helped keep her condition stable, providing hope in her ongoing battle with cancer.
Embracing Life Beyond Cancer
Three years post-diagnosis, Ann reflects on her journey with gratitude. She joyfully welcomed two new grandchildren last summer, adding to her joy alongside her five-year-old granddaughter. Family gatherings and cherished memories have become her focal points, and she is excited about future travel plans.
Though retirement after her medical leave was initially bittersweet, Ann has found great fulfillment in this new chapter of her life. The maintenance therapy continues to be well-tolerated, although the anxiety from her quarterly scans remains a challenge. Encouragingly, her initial gastroenterologist even invited her to share her story at a pancreatic cancer fundraiser, underscoring her resilience and positivity.
