Conquering My Toughest Race: A Journey of Grit and Determination

In September 2019, Eric Lasner began experiencing unusual symptoms that would alter the course of his life. Initially, he struggled to complete his regular bike rides, feeling unusually fatigued and out of shape. Despite his efforts to eat healthily and stay active, he noticed a concerning 40 lbs. weight gain. After enduring abdominal pain, dark urine, and fatigue, Eric sought medical attention, leading to a shocking diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
The Journey Begins: Diagnosis and Initial Steps
It was during a weekend of closed-circuit racing that Eric felt compelled to see a doctor. Despite his discomfort, he wanted to finish the race first. However, after experiencing severe symptoms, he visited the doctor, and following an ultrasound, he was directed to the emergency room. A CT scan revealed a troubling spot on his pancreas, and a subsequent biopsy confirmed the worst: pancreatic cancer.
Treatment Options and Support
The following day, Eric met with Dr. M. Blake Lockwood, his oncologist. With a family background in cancer research, Eric was acutely aware of the seriousness of his situation. Despite initially feeling hopeless, he was encouraged by Dr. Lockwood’s cautious optimism: “Hold on, we don’t have all the information yet.” With the support of friends and family, Eric decided to pursue the Whipple procedure, a complex surgery aimed at removing tumors from the pancreas.
Although Eric initially faced a setback when it was determined that he was not yet eligible for surgery due to complications, he remained determined. After undergoing two months of chemotherapy with a regimen known as FOLFIRINOX, he was finally approved for surgery on February 28.
The Role of Community and Recovery
Post-surgery, Eric woke in the ICU surrounded by friends and family, which played a vital role in his emotional recovery. He emphasized the importance of having a solid support network during challenging times. “My support group turned out to play a big role in my recovery,” he noted.
Continuing the Fight: Chemotherapy and Radiation
Eric’s journey didn’t end with surgery. His oncologist recommended four more months of chemotherapy, followed by radiation. Despite the challenges, including managing side effects and adjusting to life as a diabetic, Eric remained resolute in his battle against cancer. His determination resonated with his doctor, who acknowledged Eric’s fighting spirit.
Embracing Life After Treatment
After completing his treatments on October 23, Eric received promising news: a PET scan in December showed no signs of cancer, and his CA 19-9 levels were significantly decreased. However, life post-treatment brought new challenges, including managing diabetes and dietary restrictions. He learned to adapt and developed a strong mental attitude essential for his ongoing recovery.
The Power of Positivity and Community
Through his ordeal, Eric discovered vital lessons about resilience, faith, and the importance of a supportive community. He encourages others facing similar diagnoses to “put up your dukes and fight.” With a positive mindset and the backing of loved ones, he believes anyone can tackle the daunting challenges of cancer.
