Conquering Pancreatic Cancer: Thriving Beyond Survival

A Journey of Resilience: Nancy Nebenzahl’s Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer
Nancy Nebenzahl’s story is one of hope and resilience, showcasing her incredible journey as a seven-year survivor of pancreatic cancer. In 2011, Nancy faced a life-altering diagnosis that would challenge her in ways she never imagined. Through a combination of innovative medical treatments, personalized care, and holistic practices, she has not only survived but thrived.
Recognizing the Signs
In the summer of 2011, Nancy began to notice alarming symptoms. She unexpectedly lost weight, her skin and eyes turned yellow, and she experienced unusual changes in her bowel movements. Despite dismissing her discomfort as gas pains, she knew something was seriously wrong. This prompted her to seek medical attention.
The Diagnosis: A Life-Changing Moment
In August of that year, Nancy visited her doctor, who ordered blood tests and imaging scans. The results were devastating: pancreatic cancer. Confronted with the grim reality of her diagnosis, Nancy felt her world collapse. She was unaware of any survivors and feared the worst.
Surgical Intervention and Recovery
Just weeks after her diagnosis, Nancy met with renowned surgeon Dr. Nicholas Nissen. On the cusp of September, she underwent the Whipple procedure, a complex surgery that posed its own challenges. Post-surgery, Nancy faced difficulties in eating, but with the help of acupuncture and digestive enzymes, she gradually adapted. She learned that healing takes time and patience.
Innovative Chemotherapy Treatment
In December 2011, Nancy commenced chemotherapy under the guidance of Dr. William Isacoff, a forward-thinking oncologist. He crafted a tailored treatment plan incorporating a variety of drugs, including Abraxane, Eloxatin, and Avastin. Although the chemotherapy was taxing, Nancy found solace in music, listening to her favorites like Frank Sinatra and Andrea Bocelli to help her relax during treatments.
Holistic Approaches to Healing
To support her recovery, Nancy embraced a variety of complementary therapies. She combined traditional medicine with practices such as meditation, acupuncture, and gentle exercises like Pilates and qi gong. These methods not only alleviated her anxiety but also reinforced her commitment to a healthy, organic diet, which she believes is crucial for her ongoing wellness.
Support from Loved Ones
Nancy attributes much of her strength to the unwavering support of her husband. His belief in her survival played a pivotal role in her emotional resilience. Together, they navigated the challenging waters of her diagnosis, ensuring that her fears did not overwhelm her.
Continuous Monitoring and Progress
Throughout her treatment, Nancy underwent regular CT scans and blood work every three months. By October 2012, she completed her chemotherapy. In early 2013, she received plasmapheresis treatments to improve her platelet count. Today, she continues to monitor her health with annual check-ups and remains in touch with Dr. Isacoff.
A New Perspective on Life
Despite the bleak statistics often associated with pancreatic cancer, Nancy emphasizes the importance of finding hope. Her experience has transformed her outlook on life; she approaches challenges with newfound confidence and clarity. Rather than merely surviving, she is thriving and embracing each day with gratitude.
