Determined Mother’s Journey: Battling for a Brighter Future for Her Children

Dr. Jill Pechacek, a dedicated mother of three and an esteemed family physician from Colorado, is courageously facing her second battle with cancer. Having previously triumphed over ovarian cancer, she was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in September 2014. This life-altering event has not only challenged her physically but has ignited a powerful motivation within her to inspire others.
Facing a Life-Altering Diagnosis
At just 46 years old, Dr. Jill was caught off guard by her pancreatic cancer diagnosis, initially mistaking her symptoms for something less grave. With remarkable resilience, she has approached her treatment with the same strength that guided her through her earlier battle with ovarian cancer at the age of 25. “My experience with ovarian cancer deeply transformed me,” Dr. Jill reflects. “Now, I strive to share my journey with pancreatic cancer to inspire others and demonstrate the power of self-belief and community support.”
Aiming for a Decade of Memories
When Dr. Jill received her diagnosis, her children were just 12, 10, and 8 years old. Her initial request to her healthcare team was simple: 10 more years to witness her children graduate from high school. Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, a leading figure in her care at TGen, was the first to encourage her to aim higher, asking, “Why stop at 10 years?” This pivotal moment fueled her optimism, and she credits her family’s unwavering support and her faith as key components in maintaining her positive outlook.
Dr. Jill believes that having future milestones to look forward to not only strengthens her resolve but also enhances the happiness within her family. She is grateful for every moment spent with her loved ones, stating, “This journey has brought us closer than ever.”
Innovative Treatments and Unwavering Determination
Currently, Dr. Jill is navigating the challenging landscape of pancreatic cancer treatments. Having explored all FDA-approved therapies, she is now receiving a chemotherapy regimen tailored to her BRCA-like genetic mutation, originally designed for ovarian cancer. Despite facing significant side effects like neuropathy, Dr. Jill actively participates in her life, even coaching three basketball teams.
Although her cancer is aggressive and often mutates, she remains hopeful. “It feels like a complex chess game where every move counts,” she says. “I’m currently on Plan G, and I’m determined to explore every option until I reach Plan Z. I believe a breakthrough is on the horizon.”
Making a Difference Through Advocacy
Dr. Jill is committed to accelerating research and raising awareness for pancreatic cancer through her involvement with the Lustgarten Foundation. Shortly after her diagnosis, she spearheaded the “God’s Got This” team for the Foundation’s Denver walk, helping to raise nearly $44,000 for research. These events not only foster connections with fellow patients but also spread hope and encouragement in the community.
In her role as a patient advocate, Dr. Jill is part of a Dream Team of researchers focusing on innovative approaches to treating pancreatic cancer. Funded by Stand Up To Cancer and Cancer Research UK, this team aims to reprogram cancer cells to make them less aggressive. Dr. Jill actively participates in meetings, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among researchers and foundations to drive meaningful advancements in cancer treatment.
Connecting with Others and Spreading Kindness
Beyond her advocacy work, Dr. Jill offers support to fellow patients through a virtual “survivor partner” network. She actively reaches out to individuals and families facing similar battles, providing encouragement and guidance. Her connection with Jen, a fellow patient, exemplified the profound impact of her support, as they forged a bond that lasted through Jen’s courageous fight against cancer.
In a remarkable display of community spirit, Dr. Jill initiated the 29:11 Challenge, encouraging acts of kindness while fundraising for her children’s future. This campaign resonated widely, attracting participants from across the globe and significantly contributing to her family’s needs.
A Hopeful Outlook for the Future
Dr. Jill continues to draw strength from her faith, family, and community as she navigates her cancer journey. She remains hopeful that ongoing research and new treatments will change the landscape of pancreatic cancer. “I’m determined to fight this battle with grace and resilience,” she states.
