Discovering Treasure: The Joy of Finding It Early
In July 2022, Jeneen Genna received a life-altering diagnosis of stage I pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Though the news was daunting, she felt fortunate that her cancer was caught early. Initially experiencing vague symptoms, including upper gastrointestinal discomfort and post-meal nausea, Jeneen’s journey to diagnosis highlighted the importance of persistence in seeking answers. After an ultrasound revealed a pancreatic cyst, further tests confirmed her cancer diagnosis, leading her to a challenging yet transformative path.
An Unforeseen Battle
Jeneen’s medical journey began with her primary care physician, who referred her to Dr. Demetrios Tzimas at Northwell Health’s Huntington Hospital. A biopsy conducted in July 2022 ultimately confirmed her cancer diagnosis. This marked the beginning of her intense treatment journey, which included eight cycles of FOLFIRINOX, a chemotherapy regimen aimed at combating her pancreatic cancer.
The Whipple Surgery Experience
Following chemotherapy, Jeneen underwent the Whipple procedure, performed by Dr. Elliot Newman at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. This complex surgery involved the removal of part of her pancreas, intestines, and gallbladder. Post-surgery, she faced additional chemotherapy cycles, battling side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue, which she managed with medication and hydration.
Navigating Genetic Testing and Its Implications
During her treatment, genetic testing revealed that Jeneen carries the BRCA2 gene mutation. While this mutation poses an increased cancer risk, it also opened doors for her participation in the APOLLO clinical trial at Northwell Health in Greenlawn, New York. Over the course of a year in the trial, Jeneen experienced various side effects but remained committed to her health journey. After completing the trial in May 2024, she proactively opted for ovarian removal surgery to mitigate future cancer risks.
Renewed Energy and Life After Cancer
Since concluding her treatments, Jeneen has celebrated being cancer-free. Although she experiences lingering gastrointestinal issues from the Whipple procedure, she is grateful for her recovery and newfound energy. Regular scans continue to return normal results, providing her with reassurance. Despite the challenges, including feelings of survivor’s guilt, Jeneen emphasizes the importance of focusing on the present and managing the anxiety that often accompanies health check-ups.
Advocating for Others
Jeneen’s experience inspired her to give back to the community by volunteering as a cancer buddy for PanCAN, where she offers support to others facing similar struggles. Her dedication extends to participating in fundraising events for the Lustgarten Foundation, where she helped raise $17,000 for cancer research in 2023. Jeneen even donned a costume she dubbed “Whipple Woman” during a charity walk in New York City, gaining attention for her spirited approach to advocacy.

Jeneen encourages others diagnosed with pancreatic cancer to remain hopeful and resilient. She reassures them that they are not alone and stresses the importance of focusing on daily victories amidst the challenges of treatment. With ongoing advancements in clinical trials and therapies, she believes there is a promising future ahead for those battling cancer.
As she resumes her everyday life, Jeneen is determined to live each day to the fullest, cherishing the moments and striving to manage stress effectively. Her journey represents a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the enduring hope that comes with survival.
