A Journey Through Pancreatic Cancer: Thomas Stachler’s Story
At the age of 65, active and full of life, Thomas Stachler began to experience discomfort beneath his rib cage, prompting a visit to his doctor. After undergoing various tests at Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor, he received a devastating diagnosis: a tumor at the head of his pancreas, which was obstructing his bile duct. This marked the beginning of his battle with stage II pancreatic cancer.
The Challenge of Chemotherapy
Initially, Thomas pursued treatment with the FOLFIRINOX regimen at the St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Cancer Center in Ypsilanti, close to his home in Saline. However, after four rounds of chemotherapy with no improvement, he was determined to seek a second opinion. His profession as a real estate broker led him to an oncologist client who recommended the renowned Dr. Douglas Evans of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Despite the distance, Thomas felt a strong connection with Dr. Evans and his team, leading him to switch doctors.
Dr. Evans introduced Thomas to a promising high-dose radiation trial involving stereotactic body radiation therapy. This innovative treatment effectively lowered his disease markers and helped shrink the tumor, paving the way for surgery. In June 2019, Thomas underwent the Whipple procedure, a significant step in his recovery journey. He highly encourages others battling pancreatic cancer to consider Dr. Evans and his skilled team.
Embracing Life After Treatment
Post-surgery, Thomas made a promise to himself: if he survived, he would purchase an RV and explore the world. Just a month later, he fulfilled that promise. Now at 67, he has transitioned from frequent scans every four months to every six months, reflecting his improving health.
While continuing his work, Thomas dedicates time each month for adventures in his RV. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he adopted a puppy named Chewie, who has become both a stress reliever and a travel companion. Together, they embark on journeys dictated by the weather, sharing their experiences on his YouTube channel, Tom’s Travels.
A Legacy of Hope and Resilience
Tragically, Thomas Stachler passed away six years after his pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Throughout his journey, he sought care from knowledgeable professionals and prioritized living life to the fullest. His story serves as a heartfelt reminder of resilience in the face of adversity. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends who continue to cherish his memory.
