Embracing the Power of Positivity: Why Optimism is the Key to Success

A Journey of Hope: Gary Fong’s Battle with Pancreatic Cancer
In an inspiring tale of resilience, Gary Fong, a retired auto industry professional, faced an unexpected diagnosis that changed his life forever. After years of enjoying golf and traveling with his wife, a persistent wrist pain led to a shocking revelation: pancreatic cancer. This story not only highlights his struggles but also underscores the importance of community and hope in overcoming life’s challenges.
The Diagnosis: From Pain to Revelation
It all began on the golf course in 2016 when Gary noticed a nagging pain in his wrist. Initially dismissed as a sign of aging, further medical tests unveiled a startling truth. His bilirubin levels were alarmingly high, prompting a visit to a gastroenterologist. After a series of tests, doctors discovered a tumor located on the head of his pancreas.
- Initial Symptoms:
- Mild jaundice
- Unintentional weight loss
- Minor skin rashes
Reflecting on his symptoms, Gary acknowledges that while they seemed insignificant at the time, they were early warnings of a serious condition.
Seeking Treatment and Support
With the tumor identified, Gary’s journey took a critical turn. The surgical team at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange, California, led by Dr. Lawrence Wagman, performed a Whipple procedure to remove the tumor. However, post-surgery results revealed that the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes, necessitating further treatment.
Feeling lost, Gary turned to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), where he found guidance and was introduced to his oncologist, Dr. Vincent Chung, at City of Hope. Together, they embarked on a challenging regimen of chemotherapy and radiation, which included:
- Six months of chemotherapy (capecitabine and gemcitabine)
- Eight radiation treatments
Despite the ordeal, Gary remained determined and focused on the positives, channeling his energy into a mentality of hope.
The Power of Positivity and Community
When diagnosed, the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer was a disheartening 8%. However, Gary was resolute in his belief that he could be among the survivors. With unwavering support from his wife, family, and friends, Gary fostered an optimistic outlook, which proved crucial when he faced another setback in 2021.
After experiencing unintended weight loss again, a biopsy confirmed that the cancer had metastasized to his lungs, elevating his diagnosis to Stage IV. Refusing to succumb to despair, he began a new chemotherapy regimen with Dr. Misagh Karimi.
To raise awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research, Gary initiated a fundraising campaign for the 2022 PurpleStride event, aiming to gather $5,000. To his delight, the campaign exceeded expectations, raising over $20,000 through the generosity of family, friends, and even strangers. This outpouring of support reinforced Gary’s belief in the power of community.
Continuing the Fight: 2023 and Beyond
In 2023, Gary concluded his chemotherapy treatments and underwent genetic testing, which revealed an ATM mutation. As signs of cancer re-emerged in his lungs in 2025, he began immunotherapy under the supervision of Dr. Pashtoon Kasi at City of Hope, utilizing cutting-edge treatments like ipilimumab and Keytruda.
Now, eight and a half years post-diagnosis, Gary continues to embrace life fully. He enjoys traveling, playing golf, and even exploring competitive bridge with his wife.
Advocacy and Hope for Others
As a passionate advocate for pancreatic cancer awareness, Gary has shared his story at various events, including PurpleStride walks and podcasts, while urging lawmakers to allocate more resources for cancer research. His mission extends beyond his own experience; he aims to inspire fellow patients to remain hopeful.
The current five-year survival rate has improved to 13%, and Gary encourages patients to be part of this positive change. He emphasizes the importance of community support, scientific advancements, and a strong personal belief system as essential components for a fulfilling journey through adversity.
In Gary’s words, "The bottom line is optimism." With a steadfast spirit and the love of a supportive community, he continues to navigate his journey, exemplifying hope in the face of challenges.
