Fighting Back: My Journey of Resilience Against Pancreatic Cancer

Fighting Back: My Journey of Resilience Against Pancreatic Cancer

In early 2013, Anthony Del Russo began experiencing severe back pain and stomach discomfort following a cardiac procedure to clear clogged arteries. Concerned about his symptoms, he promptly consulted his primary care physician, who arranged for an ultrasound. The results were alarming: a gastroenterologist, Dr. Fiore DeVito, confirmed the presence of what appeared to be stage II pancreatic cancer.

Navigating a Challenging Treatment Journey

Upon receiving the diagnosis, Anthony took decisive action by reaching out to Dr. Marson Davidson, a surgeon affiliated with Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. Anthony’s treatment plan was carefully crafted by Dr. Davidson and oncologist Dr. Martin Gutierrez, involving an initial 12 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by a Whipple procedure, and concluding with another 12 weeks of chemotherapy. This comprehensive approach began in May 2013 with chemotherapy, and by October, Anthony underwent the critical surgery.

Despite the challenges, Anthony managed the side effects of chemotherapy relatively well, experiencing only mild discomfort, some sweating, and slight hair thinning. Post-surgery, he found that he needed enzyme supplements to aid his digestion and also faced a hernia repair.

Facing Recurrence: A New Fight

In 2018, after several routine check-ups, Anthony received distressing news: his pancreatic cancer had returned. This time, he underwent a total pancreatectomy followed by 18 sessions of radiation therapy. The removal of his pancreas led to a diagnosis of diabetes, necessitating insulin treatment.

Current Life and Ongoing Care

Today, Anthony remains vigilant about his health, keeping his port in place for ongoing monitoring. He visits the cancer center every six weeks for port maintenance and has regular follow-ups with his healthcare team. His appointments include:

  • Every three months with Dr. Gutierrez (oncologist)
  • Approximately twice a year with Dr. Davidson (surgeon)
  • Every three to six months with Dr. DeVito (gastroenterologist)
  • Every three months with Dr. Adriana Katz (endocrinologist, whom he affectionately calls his "sugar doctor")

Anthony attributes his resilience and survival to the exceptional care of his medical team, the unwavering support of his family and friends, and his faith.
