Finding Strength Through Laughter: How Humor Helps in the Battle Against Pancreatic Cancer

In December 2020, Richard Liles, a vibrant 60-year-old, found himself grappling with debilitating nausea that would change his life forever. After a series of medical evaluations including ultrasounds, MRIs, and a complex ERCP procedure, he received a life-altering diagnosis: stage III pancreatic adenocarcinoma. This marked the beginning of his courageous battle against cancer, showcasing his resilience and determination through various treatment options.

Innovative Treatment Approaches

Richard’s treatment journey began with genetic testing, but fortunately, he had no mutations that would complicate his plan. His medical team, led by the skilled Dr. Gazi Zibari, performed a Whipple procedure on January 8, 2021, at the renowned Willis-Knighton Cancer Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. Following his recovery, he commenced a rigorous cycle of FOLFIRINOX chemotherapy starting on March 29 under the guidance of Dr. Anil Veluvolu.

Richard’s commitment to his health led him to seek expertise from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, renowned for its specialized focus on pancreatic cancer. Understanding that local oncologists had less exposure to this aggressive disease, he and his wife decided to travel 240 miles for a better chance at treatment. He teamed up with Dr. Dan Zhao at MDA, further enhancing his treatment regimen.

Navigating Setbacks

Despite initially favorable news, Richard faced a setback months later when his cancer markers spiked, indicating a return of the disease. A PET scan revealed multiple liver lesions, prompting Dr. Zhao to enroll him in a new clinical trial. However, Richard experienced severe side effects from FOLFIRINOX, leading him to withdraw and switch to a more manageable treatment of gemcitabine/Abraxane while awaiting a suitable clinical trial.

As of 2023, at 62 years old, Richard is navigating stage IV pancreatic cancer with a proactive mindset. His treatment team is exploring further clinical trial options, and he remains steadfast in his approach, continuing the gemcitabine/Abraxane regimen.

Embracing Humor Amidst Challenges

One of Richard’s standout philosophies during this arduous journey has been his ability to find humor in the face of adversity. He encourages others facing similar diagnoses to lighten the mood. “One doctor said if it weren’t for cancer, I’d be in exceptional shape. I replied, ‘That’s like being voted the nicest person on death row!’” Through laughter, he aims to ease the concerns of friends and family who may feel uncomfortable around him.

Richard emphasizes that while the diagnosis may be beyond our control, how we respond to it is entirely up to us. By choosing to focus on joy and humor, he believes we can alleviate the weight of our circumstances. “Live your life to the fullest and cherish every moment,” he advises.
