How Innovative Radiation Therapy Transformed My Cancer Battle

In December 2021, I began experiencing severe abdominal pain after meals that escalated over three months. Initially, I dismissed it as a consequence of aging, but as the discomfort intensified, I sought medical advice. A visit to my doctor led to blood tests revealing a concerning CA 19-9 cancer antigen level of 295, far above the normal range of 0-35. This alarming finding triggered a follow-up CT scan, confirming the presence of a tumor entwined around my pancreas and superior mesenteric artery, ultimately diagnosed as pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Unfortunately, the tumor’s location ruled out surgical options.
Treatment Journey Begins
Under the guidance of Dr. Donald Northfelt, a compassionate oncologist at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, I embarked on a treatment plan that combined chemotherapy followed by radiation. The objective was to shrink the tumor sufficiently to make surgery feasible. I began chemotherapy just two weeks after my diagnosis, committing to a rigorous schedule of three weeks on and one week off for six months.
By the end of this period, the chemotherapy had significantly reduced the tumor size. However, standard radiation therapy was deemed too risky due to its proximity to vital abdominal organs. My medical team suggested I explore MRI-guided radiation therapy, and they highly recommended Dr. Michael Chuong at the Miami Cancer Institute in Florida, known for his expertise in this advanced treatment.
Relocating for Advanced Care
MRI-guided radiation therapy offers a dual approach, providing precise imaging and treatment simultaneously, making it ideal for my situation. Despite the daunting distance of 2,400 miles from my home in Scottsdale, Arizona, my husband and I decided that receiving care from Dr. Chuong was essential for my chance at a longer life. In August 2022, we traveled to Miami for a two-week treatment regimen.
During my time there, I received daily treatments for five consecutive days, followed by an additional two days for recovery. I was assured that the procedure would involve minimal side effects, and indeed, I felt no pain during the sessions. However, my medical history introduced unexpected complexities.
Complications from Past Surgeries
Years earlier, I had undergone gallbladder removal and a subsequent surgery to address complications, which left my biliary system sensitive. This prior history meant that, although the MRI-guided treatment itself was painless, I experienced significant discomfort, nausea, and vomiting in the two weeks following the therapy—symptoms reminiscent of pancreatitis.
Dr. Chuong and his team noted that my side effects were unusual, likely exacerbated by my previous surgeries and sensitive pancreas. Thankfully, these complications subsided after about two weeks, and I have not experienced any further issues since then.
A New Lease on Life
The MRI-guided radiation therapy proved to be a life-changing experience! Within a month of completing the treatment, I felt rejuvenated and remarkably similar to my pre-cancer self. Subsequent medical evaluations, including numerous CT scans and blood tests, revealed a dramatic drop in my cancer antigen level to 24, with no signs of active cancer.
Today, I’m filled with optimism about the future. This journey has not only transformed my health but also rekindled my hope for a vibrant life ahead.
