How Keeping My Promise Unlocked an Earlier Diagnosis: A Personal Journey

A Journey of Survival: Yolanda’s Battle with Pancreatic Cancer
In June 2018, Yolanda L. Jackson celebrated a remarkable milestone: a decade of survival from pancreatic cancer. Her journey began with a simple promise to her doctor—a promise that ultimately changed her life. This inspiring story highlights the importance of proactive health measures and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
The Diagnosis: A Life-Changing Promise
In May 2008, as Yolanda prepared for an overseas trip, she experienced symptoms reminiscent of an ulcer, a condition she had dealt with previously. Determined not to jeopardize her health during her travels, she visited her gastroenterologist. Although her initial tests returned negative results, her doctor insisted she follow up with a CT scan upon her return, given her medical history. Three months later, she honored that promise, leading to the discovery of a tumor located on the tail of her pancreas. This pivotal moment was the catalyst for her life-saving journey.
Surgical Intervention and Aggressive Treatment
The tumor was deemed operable, and in June 2008, Yolanda underwent a distal pancreatectomy performed by renowned surgeon Dr. Elliot Newman at NYU Langone Health (currently affiliated with Northwell Health). During this procedure, two-thirds of her pancreas and several lymph nodes were removed. Following her recovery, oncologist Dr. Deirdre Cohen recommended a rigorous treatment plan involving chemotherapy and radiation. This included an eight-week regimen of Gemzar, followed by six weeks of radiation combined with 5-FU, and concluded with another six weeks of Gemzar.
Throughout her treatment, Yolanda faced numerous challenges. She experienced significant side effects, including hair loss, nail damage, and severe fatigue, which resulted in a dramatic weight loss of nearly 50 pounds. Despite these hardships, she persevered and continued to work on a high-profile event, bringing together over 100 elite female athletes for a two-day celebration.
Embracing a New Normal
Yolanda completed her final chemotherapy session in January 2009, and since then, she has remained in remission. Annual MRI and CT scans have confirmed her continued health. However, the journey left her with a "new normal." Permanent side effects, including morning nausea and weakened bones from radiation, resulted in multiple vertebrae fractures requiring kyphoplasty. She now takes a pancreatic enzyme supplement for the rest of her life.
Despite these challenges, Yolanda expressed gratitude for her survival, emphasizing that her commitment to her health—keeping that promise to her gastroenterologist—was crucial to her journey.
A Legacy of Courage and Resilience
Yolanda L. Jackson passed away on July 5, 2019, after a recurrence of her cancer, but her legacy lives on. She faced her diagnosis with unparalleled courage and determination, inspiring countless others affected by pancreatic cancer. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of vigilance in health care and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
