Relentlessly Seeking Solutions: The Quest for Innovative Cures
In September 2015, Linda Milazzo faced a life-altering diagnosis: pancreatic cancer. This formidable disease emerged after a long battle with pancreatitis, which she initially experienced in 2008. Linda’s journey of resilience and hope illustrates the complexities of navigating cancer treatment, including surgical procedures and aggressive therapies. Through her story, we gain insight into the challenges she faced and her unwavering determination to seek a cure.
Early Signs and Diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer
Linda’s health took a downturn in July 2015 when she began experiencing persistent stomach pain. After visiting the emergency room at Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, New York, she was once again diagnosed with pancreatitis and kept under observation for four days. Despite feeling better and being discharged, an underlying issue lingered.
By early September, Linda’s discomfort persisted, prompting another visit to the ER. This time, she was admitted for an extended nine-day stay at Stony Brook University Hospital, where comprehensive testing revealed the shocking news: she had pancreatic cancer, specifically a tumor located on the head of her pancreas.
The Whipple Procedure and Initial Treatment
Upon receiving her diagnosis, Linda was advised to consult with a surgeon regarding the Whipple procedure—a complex surgery aimed at removing tumors in the pancreas. After conducting thorough research, she chose Dr. Mitchell Chorost at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York, to perform the surgery. On October 8, 2015, Dr. Chorost successfully completed the intricate 8.5-hour operation, removing not only the tumor but also parts of her stomach, gallbladder, and an ovary.
Following her surgery, Linda began a rigorous six-month chemotherapy regimen with Gemzar and Abraxane under the care of her oncologist, Dr. David Chu at New York Cancer and Blood Specialists. By June 2016, she celebrated a significant milestone—no visible signs of cancer remained.
The Relentless Return of Cancer
Unfortunately, Linda’s battle was far from over. During a follow-up appointment just four months later, scans revealed another tumor in a different section of her pancreas. Through a combination of radiation and chemotherapy using Xeloda, she achieved another temporary victory.
However, in May 2017, a PET scan revealed yet another tumor, prompting Linda to undergo CyberKnife radiation treatment—a targeted form of therapy. Despite initial optimism, her CA 19-9 levels skyrocketed from 62 to 4,170, signaling a serious recurrence. Further scans confirmed that the cancer had spread, affecting her abdomen, liver, lymph nodes, and even causing lesions on her lungs.
A Journey of Hope and Determination
Linda’s experience has been marked by relentless doctor visits and ongoing treatment, as she continues to search for a cure. "Since my diagnosis, I’ve been on a quest for answers," she expressed. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the difficulties faced by those battling pancreatic cancer.
Sadly, Linda passed away three and a half years after her initial diagnosis, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and hope. Her willingness to share her journey not only sheds light on the realities of this harsh disease but also offers support to others who may be facing similar challenges.
