Thriving and Thankful: Embracing Life’s Journey with Gratitude

In December 2012, Ken Parme received a life-altering diagnosis: inoperable pancreatic cancer. The tumor was dangerously situated, blocking his bile duct and entangling nearby blood vessels. Seeking help at the UPMC Cancer Center, Ken met with oncologist Dr. Nathan Bahary and surgeon Dr. Herbert Zeh III, who devised an aggressive treatment plan aimed at shrinking the tumor for a potential robotic Whipple procedure.

A Multi-Pronged Approach to Treatment

Ken’s journey began with chemotherapy, specifically a regimen involving 5-FU. This treatment was administered via a portable pump, allowing him some mobility despite being connected for three days every other week. Sadly, the results were underwhelming, with only minimal tumor reduction.

• CyberKnife Radiation: Targeted treatment utilizing gold beads placed in the tumor.

Following chemotherapy, Ken underwent CyberKnife radiation. This innovative treatment involved inserting tiny gold beads directly into the tumor to enhance targeting accuracy. Ken was secured to an air bed while the radiation machine circled around him, delivering precise doses every other day over a six-day period. Although the wait for results was challenging, side effects were manageable.

Continuing the Fight with More Chemotherapy

Once the radiation was completed, Ken returned to chemotherapy, transitioning to Gemzar and Abraxane for the remainder of the year. Throughout this phase, he experienced numerous ups and downs due to the side effects. Nevertheless, his medical team remained optimistic. After a year of treatment, doctors decided to halt the chemotherapy, marking a significant milestone in his journey.

A Five-Year Survival Story

Despite the aggressive treatment, the tumor did not shrink enough for surgical removal. However, after five years, Ken continues to live with the tumor, which has remained stable without growth or spread. His doctors remain hopeful that their efforts have been effective.

While treatment has left Ken with some long-term effects such as diabetes, digestive issues, and neuropathy, he reflects positively on his journey. He celebrates the joy of seeing the birth of his fourth grandchild and looks forward to commemorating 40 years of marriage with his wife.
