A Journey of Hope: Camille Moses’ Triumph Over Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer

Meet Camille Moses, a resilient warrior who has defied the odds as a seven-year survivor of stage IV pancreatic cancer. Her journey began in March 2012, when persistent lower back pain prompted her to seek medical attention. At 53, Camille initially dismissed her symptoms as typical signs of aging or menopause. However, as her fatigue and breathlessness worsened, she knew something was wrong and headed to the emergency room.

Facing the Harsh Reality of Cancer

After undergoing scans at the hospital, Camille received heartbreaking news: spots were detected on her pancreas, liver, and lungs. The diagnosis hit hard, reminding her of her mother, who had succumbed to pancreatic cancer when Camille was just 24. Following a week of tests and a liver biopsy, she learned she had stage IV pancreatic cancer. The attending oncologist delivered a chilling prognosis, predicting she would only have eight months to live and advising against chemotherapy.

A Life-Changing Decision: Finding a New Doctor

Determined to fight for her life, Camille sought a second opinion at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. There, she met Dr. Caio Max Rocha Lima, who had already reviewed her scans. Recognizing the aggressive nature of her cancer, he offered hope, assuring her that chemotherapy could be effective. His encouraging words became a beacon of strength as Camille embarked on FOLFIRINOX, a rigorous 17-month chemotherapy regimen.

Overcoming Adversity with Determination

The side effects of treatment were severe; Camille struggled with her appetite and lost significant weight. However, every three months brought good news: her tumors were shrinking, and her pain was diminishing. With each positive scan, Camille’s hope grew stronger, and she became determined to reclaim her life. Inspired by her memories of New York City, where she spent her childhood, she set personal goals while fighting her illness.

Giving Back: A Beacon of Hope for Others

After responding well to chemotherapy, Camille has been in remission since July 2013. She now sees Dr. Jaime Merchan and participates in follow-up scans every six months, all of which have returned clear results. Passionate about helping others, she volunteers to support cancer patients and raises funds for research. Camille has participated in the Dolphins Cancer Challenge, completing a 14-mile bike ride to promote awareness and funding for cancer research.

Additionally, she actively serves on the Patient and Family Advisory Council at Sylvester and has shared her story as a survivor speaker for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Her advocacy extends to various events, where she inspires others with her journey of perseverance.
