Howard’s story began with a family history of pancreatic cancer, prompting him to take precautionary measures. In 2006, he underwent an annual endoscopic ultrasound, during which a 2-cm tumor was discovered on his pancreas. This was a pivotal moment, leading to immediate action and treatment.
His gastroenterologist, Dr. Stavros Stavropolous, played a crucial role in his diagnosis. At the time, Dr. Stavropolous was associated with Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan and has since transitioned to become the chief of gastroenterology at Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, NY.
A Comprehensive Treatment Plan: Surgery and Beyond
Following his diagnosis, Howard was referred to Dr. John Chabot, who performed a complete pancreatectomy—a surgery that involved the removal of Howard’s pancreas, spleen, and additional organs due to the presence of mini-metastases. This substantial step was the beginning of a rigorous treatment regimen.
Chemotherapy became a vital part of Howard’s recovery, managed by Dr. William Sherman, who prescribed a combination of gemcitabine, Taxotere, and Xeloda. Despite the intensity of the treatment, Howard was fortunate to experience only moderate side effects, including:

- Swelling in his legs
- Thickening of his nails
As his chemotherapy concluded, Howard underwent radiation therapy for six weeks, which he tolerated well, experiencing only mild fatigue.

Howard’s journey to recovery wasn’t without its challenges, particularly regarding insurance coverage. While his surgery was partially covered, the costs for chemotherapy were not, although radiation expenses were managed by his insurance.
