A Journey Through Pancreatic Cancer: Larry Nicolet’s Inspiring Story
In a challenging twist of fate, Larry Nicolet faced a life-altering diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2011. There, he underwent a Whipple procedure, a significant surgery to remove part of his pancreas, followed by six months of chemotherapy using Gemzar.

Despite a successful initial treatment, Larry’s battle was far from over. Just 15 months later, in April 2012, doctors discovered a recurrence of the cancer. With Dr. Lillemoe having relocated to Mass General in Boston, Larry was referred to Dr. Michael House, who performed surgery to remove the remainder of his pancreas. Although this procedure left him a type I diabetic, he adapted well, humorously referring to his insulin pump as his “outside pancreas.”
However, the challenges persisted. In May 2013, oncologist Dr. Patrick Loehrer detected cancer cells in the scar tissue where Larry’s pancreas had once been. This led to a new round of chemotherapy with Abraxane and Gemzar. Remarkably, Larry has battled pancreatic cancer three times, including once without a pancreas, showcasing his remarkable strength and determination.
A Life Renewed and Giving Back
Today, at 70 years old, Larry is cancer-free and lives life to the fullest. He enjoys golfing, spending quality time with his family, and planning exciting travels. Larry attributes his recovery and ongoing vitality to what he calls the three Fs: family, faith, and friends.
