After numerous CT scans, he sought help at Providence Urgent Care in Spokane, Washington, where further tests revealed the shocking diagnosis: pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
Taking Action: The First Step is Surgery
Mike was referred to Dr. Juan Mejia, a specialized surgeon at the Providence Liver and Cancer Center. On September 30, 2014, he underwent an extended distal pancreatectomy, which involved the removal of his spleen and gallbladder. The tumor was classified as T3N0M0, indicating it had not spread beyond the pancreas. While the surgery was a critical first step, it marked the beginning of a challenging recovery journey.
The Long Battle: Two Years of Chemotherapy
Just a month post-surgery, treatment continued with chemotherapy. Under the care of Dr. Peter Schlegel at CancerCare Northwest, Mike began weekly gemcitabine infusions over several cycles. His regimen evolved to include continuous pump chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Unfortunately, by April 2015, scans indicated that the cancer was progressing, leading to a switch to the FOLFIRINOX regimen.

The radiation therapy required for his treatment took a toll on Mike’s body, leading to compression fractures in his spine.
