Facing Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer: A Journey of Resilience and Hope

In November 2021, my life took a shocking turn when I received a diagnosis of stage IV pancreatic adenocarcinoma. What began as a sudden, sharp pain in my lower right abdomen led to an unexpected health crisis. Initially, I thought it was just a simple case of appendicitis, but the reality was far more daunting. However, instead of succumbing to despair, I decided to change my perspective. The label of stage IV cancer does not equate to immediate death; rather, it can become a stepping stone to survival.

Understanding My Diagnosis

A trip to Urgent Care for my intense abdominal pain resulted in a series of blood tests that came back normal. My health seemed fine—until my doctor, Dr. Megan Bowles from Roswell, Georgia, suggested a CT scan. The scan revealed shocking news: a tumor in my pancreas and multiple tumors in my liver. With that revelation, I met Dr. Harpaul Gill from Atlanta Cancer Care, who confirmed my diagnosis of stage IV pancreatic cancer.

Feeling overwhelmed, I sought a second opinion at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. The oncologist recommended FOLFIRINOX, a chemotherapy regimen, while suggesting I prepare for the worst. However, I was determined to explore all options, including potential surgery.

Exploring Treatment Options

After returning home, I began my chemotherapy journey with FOLFIRINOX. Alongside, I sought a Plan B. Dr. Eddie Abdalla at Atlanta Liver and Pancreas Surgical Specialists provided a glimmer of hope, stating that surgery might be a possibility. A tumor biopsy and genetic analysis revealed only one mutation, KRAS G12D.

After eight months of FOLFIRINOX, I underwent Y90 embolization for my liver followed by additional chemotherapy. My tumor markers fluctuated but eventually showed improvement. I celebrated those moments when my CA 19-9 levels indicated progress. In December 2022, I had a pancreatectomy to remove the pancreatic tumor, spleen, and some lymph nodes. By February 2023, a liver resection left me with No Evidence of Disease (NED) for several months.

However, a June 2023 scan revealed a new tumor in my liver, prompting another round of chemotherapy with Gemzar/Abraxane. Thankfully, by October 2023, Dr. Abdalla successfully removed the tumor and my gallbladder. I focused on recovery and even took a brief hiatus to welcome my first grandchild!

My Approach to Wellness

Throughout my treatment journey, I relied on over-the-counter vitamin D and a multivitamin blend, which was particularly beneficial for my digestive health post-surgery. Dark chocolate became a daily indulgence, boosting my platelet count. With the help of a dietitian, I emphasized a protein-rich diet filled with green vegetables, and thus far, I have managed to avoid needing Creon.

I also adopted a daily routine that included deep breathing, walking, and moments of quiet reflection. This practice has been crucial in maintaining my mental peace. My supportive husband, sons, and close friends have consistently encouraged me, ensuring that the notion of "giving up" never entered my mind.

Embracing Life Today

As I prepare to pause my Gemzar treatment while still effective, I’m eager to explore clinical trials for maintenance therapies. My CA 19-9 levels are within the normal range, and I’m eagerly awaiting my upcoming PET scan. Regardless of the outcome, I feel optimistic about the advancements in clinical research.

To anyone facing a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, remember that the stage of your illness is merely a label. Embrace the fight! If you’re not already prioritizing your health, now is the time. I’ve endured numerous treatments—none were easy—but I learned to adapt to recovery days, allowing me to return to my passions and profession.

Finally, choose a healthcare provider who believes in you and collaborates with a center of excellence. After consultations with various surgeons, I found hope with Dr. Abdalla, who empowered me to advocate for my health actively. My journey has taught me the importance of hope, perseverance, and gratitude in every day.
