Unleashing the Warrior Within: Strategies for Winning Every Battle

In 2013, life was thriving for Melissa Kartasevich, a devoted mother to her six-year-old daughter and happily engaged. However, her world turned upside down when a sudden pain on her left side led her to an emergency room visit. After a series of tests, she received the shocking diagnosis of pancreatic cancer at just 38 years old. With her daughter’s future in mind, Melissa was determined to fight this formidable disease.
Navigating the Path to Treatment
To begin her battle against pancreatic cancer, Melissa sought out top specialists. She consulted with Dr. Andreas Karachristos, a pancreatic surgeon at Fox Chase Cancer Center, who explained the complexities of her tumor’s location, making immediate surgery impossible. Instead, he connected her with Dr. Joshua Meyer, a radiation oncologist, and Dr. Igor Astsaturov, a medical oncologist, to formulate a strategic treatment plan.
The initial phase involved a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy using gemcitabine. After six weeks, although the tumor shrank, it still wasn’t small enough for surgery. In July 2013, Melissa transitioned to a more aggressive chemotherapy regimen called FOLFIRINOX.
Achieving Surgery: A Milestone in the Fight
Despite experiencing side effects, Melissa continued to work while undergoing treatment. By November 2013, she received the encouraging news that her tumor had sufficiently shrunk for surgery. On January 3, 2014, a complex procedure removed her tumor along with parts of her pancreas and spleen, as well as the critical artery supplying blood to her organs.
Post-surgery, Dr. Astsaturov advised Melissa to undergo an additional six months of chemotherapy to minimize the risk of recurrence. By August 2014, she completed her treatment and returned to her normal activities, even joining the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to advocate for others facing similar battles.
Facing Recurrence and Exploring New Options
Just when Melissa thought she had overcome her health challenges, a setback occurred in March 2016 when doctors discovered cancer had returned, this time in her fallopian tubes. Undeterred, Dr. Astsaturov found a clinical trial for her involving ipafricept, gemcitabine, and Abraxane.
Melissa’s resilient spirit and commitment to seeking innovative treatment options left a lasting impact on those around her. She embodied the motto of “never give up,” striving to live each day to the fullest despite the challenges she faced.
Remembering Melissa’s Legacy
Though Melissa ultimately lost her battle with pancreatic cancer after five and a half years, her journey continues to inspire others. Her determination and willingness to explore new treatment avenues will pave the way for future patients. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family during this difficult time.
